1. How do you get the letter to have the sex marker changed on your paper work (ie. birth certificate)?
2. How were you able to get legally married?
3. Now that your sex marker is changed on all of your documents, will anyone ever question your sex?

1. How do you get the letter to have the sex marker changed on your paper work (ie. birth certificate)?
Every state has different requirements on procedures to change the sex marker on your official documents. Usually, you need a signed (possibly notarized) letter from your surgeon stating they performed “irreversible sex change surgery.” Because most state laws are vague in their requirements, many people have been successful in getting a letter like this from their chest surgeon; however, some states do require genital surgery to be performed before they will change your official documents.

2. How were you able to get legally married?
I was able to marry a woman-born-female, because I had changed the sex to male on all of my documents. To get the marriage license, we only had to show our driver’s license; however, different states require different documents to be changed before recognizing your “new” sex. Because my sex had been changed to male on all of my documents, I wasn’t worried about what the exact requirements were in the state where we got married. Check with your local county clerk’s office to see what the requirements are for your state.

3. Now that your sex marker is changed on all of your documents, will anyone ever question your sex?
I’m not sure – I hope not! I’ve put a lot of effort into changing all of my documents, being very careful to do it the legal way and not the “accidental” way. I supposed it is technically possible that someone somewhere down the line may question it, but if my current legally-changed documents aren’t enough, then nothing would be.
